Banteay Srei - (means Citadel of the Women) Constructed began on 967

Banteay Srei is considered by many to be the jewel in the crown of Angkorian art. A Hindi temple dedicated to Shiva. It is cut from stone of a pinkish hue and includes some of the finest stone carving seen anywhere on the planet. It is one of the smallest sites of Angkor. It is wonderfully well preserved and many of tis carvings are three-dimentional. The stone scultures are said to have been built by women as the elaborate carvings are too fine for the hand of a man.

A visit to Banteay Srei is worthwhile and its around 32 km from Siem Reap. Its possible to combine a visit to Banteay Srei with a trip to the 'Thousands Lingas' at Kbal Spean. ;)

View from the back side of Banteay Srei

Classic carvings at Banteay Srei temples includes delicate women with lotus flowers in her hand and traditional skirts clearly visible. Almost every inch of these interior buildings is covered in decoration.

When Banteay Srei was discovered it was asssumed to be from 13th to 14th centuries, as the refined carvings must have come at the Angkor period. It was later dated to 967 from inscriptions found at the site.

Entrace to the Bantay Srei which is a hindu temple dedicated to Shiva!

Water fall that dried up inside the Kbal Spean (forest) ... too bad, it would have looked really good! ;)

The temple is square and has entrances at the east and west. It is one the temples in Angkor Wat not to be commissioned by a King, but by a Brahman who may be a tutor to Jayavarman.
